The Gospels of Mark and Luke describe the story of Jairus, a ruler of the synagogue, who came to the Lord, Jesus Christ, to plead for Him to come to his home and heal his 12 year old daughter who was grievously ill. While on the way to Jairus'home, word came that the daughter had died. When Jesus heard these words, He said to Jairus, "Be not afraid, only believe".

When Jesus came to Jairus' home, he told the mourners, "Weep not; she is not dead, but sleepeth". The mourners laughed him to scorn.

Jesus took the hand of the young girl and said, "Maid, arise". Immediately, "her spirit came again, and she arose straightway".

In his painting, Carl Bloch presents us with the moment when Jesus is about to enter Jairus's home. The young daughter lies still in death, as her grieving mother looks anxiously over her. However, in moments the sadness will turn to joy as her precious daughter is restored to her.

How many times in our lives do we need to hear the Savior's words, "Be not afraid, only believe"? How often our fears and sadness can be wiped away by faith in Him who can heal all wounds.

This image will bring a sense of hope to all who will seek out its message.
